Greg Ritson-Bennett

A little about Greg:

Born in England, Ritson-Bennett spent his childhood in Drumheller and Edmonton.

His 11 years of study at the University of Alberta included biochemistry, genetics, education and dentistry.

Ritson-Bennett began his dental practice in Innisfail and treated patients here for 31 years.

His commitments led him to be chairman of the Alberta Dental Association and College’s confidential assistance program, which helped dentists with family and personal challenges.

In 2005, he received the association’s Distinguished Medal of Service for outstanding service to the profession or public on a local, provincial, national or international level.

He was also a past president of the Rotary Club of Innisfail, and received a Paul Harris Fellowship for his contribution to Rotary.

His caring spilled over to into the community to the point he received Citizen of the Year award in 1991.

His care extended beyond Innisfail and in the past few years, he and his wife volunteered in Guatemala to help people without access to dental care.

He died tragically at age 62 while he was off the coast in India. Greg went for a swim and a rogue wave took him. He was with his wife, Virginia, and members of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church of Innisfail who were doing charity work in the South Asian country.

He and his wife Virginia have five grandchildren and four children — Noel, Rebecca, Timothy and Andrew.

A devoted father, he attended their school and sporting events, even coaching the Dolphins Swim team in Innisfail.

On Feb. 4 he was buried in the Innisfail Cemetery following a funeral at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Red Deer.

He is remembered for his great sense of humour, 6ft 7' height, and a big heart that desired to help by volunteering.
